- IT La colonna della ‘ Consolata ’. Omaggio di riconoscenza alla Vergine, che liberò Torino dal colera del 1835. Il morbo s’abbatté sulla città anche nel 1854. Su 10 casi, 6 erano mortali. L’Oratorio era circondato da case in cui si moriva. I cadaveri erano così orribilmente sfigurati dalla malattia, che anche i parenti si rifiutavano di dar loro sepoltura. Don Bosco arruolò 40 volontari tra i suoi ragazzi, e li lanciò in quel terrore generale. Il lazzaretto, traboccante di malati, li vide curare, trasportare, seppellire i morti, sempre presenti e instancabili. Ai poveri portavano lenzuola, vestiti, coperte. L’Oratorio fu letteralmente svuotato. L’epidemia durò 3 mesi, e per 3 mesi durò la loro carità. Come Don Bosco aveva promesso, nessun ragazzo dell’Oratorio fu colpito dal male.
- IT The column of the “ Consolata ”. A monument erected in honour of Our Lady, through whose intercession Turin was freed from cholera in 1835. Turin was visited by the scourge again in 1854. Six out of every ten cases proved fatal. The Oratory was surrounded by houses in which many people lay dying. The corpses of the dead were so terribly disfigured that even their relatives refused to bury them. Don Bosco recruited forty of his boys to work in the area. They assisted the sick in the hospitals, brought out and buried the dead, and they were always ready to give a hand where they were most needed. They provided the sick with bed linen and gave them clothing; the Oratory was literally cleaned out of all spare clothing. The epidemic lasted for three months, and Don Bosco and his boys were on the job all the time. As Don Bosco had promised, not a single boy in the Oratory contracted the disease.
