Anima e protagonista del Risorgimento italiano, il conte Camillo Benso di Cavour fu amico fedele di Don Bosco. « Mi ripeteva sovente — scrisse il Santo — che se avevo qualcosa da domandargli o da sollecitargli avrei trovato sempre un posto alla sua tavola ». « Nel mio ufficio al Ministero non c’è possibilità di parlare con calma — soggiungeva. — A tavola invece... è tutta un’altra cosa! ». E Don Bosco, che voleva essere sempre prete, anche con i grandi del mondo, ringraziò l’illustre statista con queste parole: « Pregherò per voi, signor Ministro, perché Dio vi aiuti sempre, nel corso della vostra vita e nell’ora della vostra morte ». L’avvenire doveva provare che la preghiera di Don Bosco era stata esaudita.

The Saint wrote: “He often said to me that if ever I needed any-thing from him I would always find a place at his table.” Cavour himself said: “In my official capacity as a Minister, it is not always possible to speak with calm, but, at table ... that is another matter.” And Don Bosco, who was at all times, and with everyone, a priest, thanked the illustrious statesman with these words: “I will pray for you, Mr. Minister, that God will help you always in life and at the hour of your death.” The future showed that the prayer of Don Bosco was heard.
