Gli alberi offrivano la loro ombra anche a Giovanni e a sua madre, quando venivano a pascolare la loro unica vaccherella. È una terra che dà erba grassa. Tutto vi è ameno. Le colline hanno una certa dolcezza, e anche il cielo. I campi sono privi di siepi: una distesa sola di verde o di zolle rossastre. Tutta cosi è la campagna tra Capriglio, i Becchi e Castelnuovo, dove Giovanni fece il suo primo mestiere di pastorello.; IT Three cows and a cow-girl under the shade of two large willow trees. Nothing has changed in the last hundred years. The trees offered shade to both John and his mother when they brought their only cow to pasture. The soil here produces rich grass. A very pleasant scene. The hills and the clear skies have a charm of their own. The fields have no hedges; there is only a long stretch of green or reddish turf. The whole countryside of Capriglio, Becchi and Castelnuovo, where John learned his first trade as a shepherd, is similar to this.
